N9 on sale in Finland ... and a few other things

I'm fell for it again. Long period of silence. It doesn't mean that things have stood still.

First of all, a very close friend of mine died. Gary Birkett, lcuk to the community, lost his life a few weeks back. For this, for me, world suddenly stopped in its tracks. He was truly an inspiration to us all. I wish all the best to his family while they seek to cope with the tragic loss. To Gary I raise a pint of Guinness. Rest in peace my friend. You will be missed, time and time again.

N9 finally shipped. I was in my earlier post saying that it was a swan song for Nokias Meego efforts, but as faith put it, it is likely the swan song for Meego proper.

It's hard to put into words the feelings we have been having during the late summer/early autumn time. Software has been complete since summer, but some surprise issues had been helding the sales start for some time.

That's business as usual, but not very pleasant ever. We did a few touches here and there all the time until the release, but it was just polish really.

While the agonizing wait was ongoing, software teams worked furiously on making the experience even better. First update release is complete, we will be distributing fruits of it to developers soon and end users a bit further down the road.

Improvements are a legion. This is due to the fact that many teams stopped the sales release work already in spring time and set their sights on the first update release. I counted around 3500 improvements (fixes or features) to be in the release.

Out of interest, I tohttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifok a look at the git activity of meegotouch.

23.9.2011
http://meego.gitorious.org/meegotouch/libmeegotouch/commits/Harmattan_1.1.1
28.9.2011

Of course, those dates do not mean that the versions were finalized on those days, just that those were the days that last tags of meegotouch were made. For example meegotouch theme for 1.1.1 was update just today, so, it probably isn't ready yet.
http://meego.gitorious.org/meegotouch/meegotouch-theme/commits/Harmattan_1.1.1

Now it's time that we are going full steam ahead with the 1.2 update release, where work is proceeding nicely.

Back to other topics. I have been "grinding" the triple A title games that I have missed, with most recent being the portal, and modern warfare 1&2. After all the hype, I was a bit disappointed about portal. Sure, the mood was pretty OK, but writing was amateurish and the "hidden" marks of the previous lab rats (you?) didn't tell enough story to me. SUmmarising, it was fun, but didn't really pull me in so that I would have to start portal 2 immediately.

That was not the case with call of duty modern warfare. When the very first mission started in random boat in the middle of Atlantic, I was totally hooked in. This was totally immersive game and I really had to drag myself away from the game two times. I didn't even touch the multiplayer after playing it though, just went to steam and bought the second in the trilogy.

Unfortunately, second was this time not as good as the first in the series. It was generally ok, but the events felt very detached from each other. Action was still good and level design was fun to play, but it wasn't such a holistic experience of being there as in the first. If you haven't played those games yet, do yourself a favor and don't start at 10 PM, but 9 PM. Games last only 6-7 hours and they are total adrenaline rush. You won't fall asleep after playing.

I have also been playing with windows 8 a bit. Truly, a leap for Microsoft. Both on the base OS side (it boots so fast that it should default to hibernation rather than standby), as well as UX side. Metro UI is clear, simplified in a good way and beautiful. I'm not a fan of the Metro home screen concept though. I think it was barely adequate for windows phone, but it is too limited for tablet use. Clutter really. However rest of the tablet & phone UI is a jewel. It's so easy to use that even my 2,5 years old daughter is able to power it on, unlock it with the picture password, open metro home and start drawing with the paint application. Not all rosy though, apps start horribly slow, they crash all the time, perform really badly and seem to be generally been given at most a few hours of effort. I hope they are there to set an example that you can do better. Fortunately, there is always the full OS behind that makes the tablet pretty OK even though it's just a developer hacking device.

I was asked recently where I failed during harmattan. I answered that I didn't resist enough the pressure and the temptation of doing the events screen to home. While it serves its purpose well and performs (especially in 1.2) much better than the apps pushing data to it, I think we should have left it out. It's a bit of clutter in the same way as metro home is clutter and cost us a lot of development and management time. Time we might have spent elsewhere better.

But now that I was thinking of windows 8, I think I would revise that. The biggest thing I failed to understand to need a push was replacing backstacking with horizontal paneling.

N9 home is clearly a single layer where you move horizontally between the three different views. On top of home, you have application layer. But with back stacking, applications themselves start to visually have many layers on top of each other. Leaving menus and dialogs aside, I think it really doesn't suit the UI paradigm.

Correct and clinical (like my friend Otso would say) would have been to keep applications in single layer. Lock screen sits on top of applications, applications sit on top of home. All views, move horizontally to show different aspects of the layer. Virtual KB, menus and dialogs are ok to float on top of anything. As back button is not needed anymore, need for toolbar overall diminishes considerably.

Back button really has held the UI design. Swipe would also have been strengtened as a concept by becoming the navigation tool also within the applications. Windows mobile 7 devices have the back as a physical button allowing the UIs themselves to not need a toolbar-alike construct for consumption views, only for productivity views.

I'm kind of signing myself away from the meego also with this blog. I have started already working part time in the smart devices organization (that's windows phones in nokia terms) in forward center. Work that I'm doing now is at the moment revolving around hardware problems now than software. I assume that to change a bit more as we start getting a clear picture on where we want to be going with hardware in the future.

It is very exciting work indeed. We are looking at the devices coming out in 2013 / 2014 now and the tech for that time is something mind boggling. For a long time, it seemed to me that invention was stalling again after apple iphone 4 came out. iphone was revolutionary, but 4 didn't bring anyting big on top of 3/3gs, just nicer looking, more power and a bit more resolution. 4S doesn't seem to be bringing much new either, just better and faster than previous model. Android has been mostly fixing the flaws it has had all the time, and trying to make the platform vaguely performant.

When I'm looking at the next generation of CPU/GPU combinations, I'm almost speechless on what could be done with them. We were stuggling so much with N9 to get the 60 fps possible on the 848x480 display (have you guys noticed hidden 16 pixel rows by the way? <- hackers take a peek and gain a few thousand pixels more) with the limits that we had. These limits are now totally gone. There is no limit for 2.5 D view rendering performance neither on CPU or GPU side.

2013 onwards, industry will make a huge leap in CPU and GPU power and start being close to PS3 & Xbox power levels. It's so fast that even Android can start innovating new things. ;)

This leap of power will usher a new age for mobile devices - if we play our cards right (I mean, as the industry, not only as Nokia). Display technology is advancing at immense rates. Transparent and flexible OLEDs seem to raise so many opportunities that it makes my imagination just tingle of working to set the playground ready for the next innovations on the software front.

If you see issues in n9, don't hesitate to contact me. I'm still well connected to nokia meego and there is a lot of talent working on making it all the time better.

Perhaps it's time to call it a day.

  1. What I head a couple of times is that it is quite hard bringing up the keyboard in the sms/messages view. I totally agree... you have to press exactly inside the input field and that can be quite challenging.

The same problem is in many other places (less annoying) especially many buttons can be hard to click (they need larger "invisible" hit area) and for links in other applications than the web browser - twitter comes to mind.

  2. Nice post as always.

Can you share any views on future of Nokia Meego?

N9 seems to be (after playing 24 h with it and 3 months with N950) very complete product (both HW and FW) already and with Qt there shouldn't be any problems on app availability either.

So even if I'm totally positive about future Nokia Windows devices, there could/should be commercial potential for N9 also.

But is it so that N9&Meego will only be a test platform for example for future UI ideas but there will be no new Meego devices? Or is there any commercial future for Meego devices?

  3. I totally agree that some UI elements need a larger invisible hit area.

  4. @Halla:

Yes, the UX will continue on, as has been stated multiple times.
Based on Meego? I dare not comment.

@Nixu: I also agree on the hit area issue for buttons. But not only invisible hit area, perhaps the buttons themselves should also be a bit bigger. We have been discussing that recently a bit.

  5. @Kenneth
I totally agree with you. I still need many tries to bring up the keyboard when writing a sms.

Another example where I can't understand the UI idea - in the clock app you have to press such a small button to add an alarm. Please make the hole line/text touchable. (I think it would look even nicer without the 'plus' button)

things that need to be solved in current release. I just hope this is already fixed in upcoming firmware.

    * "services connections" seems to dissapear sometimes :-/

    * file upload in browser.

    * when in landscape the toolbar should be at bottom instead of top. Why? Well this is because several times a have by mistake pressed on the menu button when "scrolling" (holding my tumb to near the menu)

    * a "small delay" in event view when pressing on a message so user doesn't by mistake open the twitter/facebook app. (Done that several times when scrolling the feed :-/

    * make sure scrolling is "saved" when pressing on a feed so next time swipe back I dont have to scroll done too position I was.

    * Mediaplayer if clicking on albumimage show the albumstrack instead of pause/play

    * cursorkeys on vkb, and make the magnification glass work in qt-components and better than current its seems very buggy atm. :-/

Sorry for my poor english but hope you get my points :-)

Overall you all did a great job with N9. But I really hope Nokia improves N9 and not come say in a half year "N9 is dead" because then I am sure MANY customers will not have trust on Nokia!

I am will for sure not go for the future WP phones for several reasons!

So respect the consumers too have choices and support both :)

  7. I love my N9 so far, but I`m concerned about the battery. It lasts ca 24h on average use (I expected more...). The "battery usage" app shows that powerconsumption in idle-mode varies from 10 to 15 mA. At 15 the app shows a warning of "battery draining" (has happened twise). Is my battery a "rotten" one??

    ReplyDelete
  8. Anonymous19:48

One thing I would love to see on the N9 is the possibility to write text messages using a classic numeric keypad with T9. Using the tiny qwerty buttons can get annoying.

  9. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Konttori. I love the Meego UI although it isn't very polished now. It gives me a warm feeling that Nokia is going to update the OS instead of abandoning it.

I hope there will be folders for the app screen. It can get pretty tedious to look for an app once you've installed more.

The wi-fi reception is quite weak compared to other phones. My N9 can't even detect a wi-fi network which my Galaxy can detect, connect and surf. Can anything be done in firmware to improve this?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Just got my N9 with V 10.2011.34-1_PR_005
Have similar thoughts regarding the UI.

The missing back button issue can be solved easily. Actually the "swipe down to close" should be standard behavior. But you must land in the calling app, or higher level menu. Currently you get to the multitasking view and are lost somehow.

Another small issue are those switches you have to flick. If they are close to the screen edge and you want to flick them screen inwards, you can have some problems. Tapping them should be enough. Visually they can remain flick switches.

Where is the nice media player we had on the N900?

There is much more to say. Any reasonable channel for this? I hope a lot on my improvement ideas is among the 3500. Thanks for the heads up!

    ReplyDelete
  11. @Kenneth & @Mike. Totally agree. I think you have nailed the biggest issues. Like to add 'global' copy-paste to the magnifying and cursorkeys part! After a week of use, my battery is great. Also was a bit worried at first. First of all go offline, in Facebook and Skype. Should be default.

  12. Anonymous23:02

Great post. Thanks for keeping us in the know. Also, thanks for those 3500+ improvements coming the N9's way. What is 1.2 about? Any new features or bug fixes/improvements. Are you allowed to speak on that yet?

  13. The music player can also be improved. There is no cover flow for browsing. If you select an album from the recently played list there is no way to display the tracklist. The facility to search and download lyrics would be great.

    ReplyDelete
  14. One more thing, I'd like to push through all channels I can. For myself of course, I like my one day old N9, but I also like to see this device successful. It stands out of the crowd and has deserved it.

In one-handed operation, using the thumb to tap and swipe, the palm touches easily the screen edges on the long side. This leads e.g. to unwanted jumping into RSS items on the notification screen. Sometimes other unwanted side effects can be observed.

There should be a guard stripe on both long sides, maybe 5mm wide. Within those stripes, no tapping is accepted. This area can only be used for swiping.
This should not have any side effect to applications. At least the notification/feeds screen would not suffer, normally you would tap clearly inside the screen, not at the edges. This guard area could be configurable per app, as some apps might need those edge stripes.

  16. Another thing, how about a graphic equalizer for the music player? I agree with Mike7b4, tapping on the album image should show the tracklist, not pause/play. Also there should be a facility to delete music files within the player.

  20. Hi Konttori, thanks for an excellent blog and for the N9!

I would REALLY appreciate if you could clarify a bit on the surprise issues that held back the release? more precisely, a lot of people seem to interpret that as a validation of their theories that the N9 was intentionally delayed becuse of the WP strategy or because Mr. Elop simply wants to sabotage it. needless to say, I don't believe that was the case.

so, if/when if you cannot say what caused the delays, can you PLEASE at least put an end to these silly conspiracy theories? unless they are true of course. :)

  21. thanks for this info! as mentionned its important to have better access to little butons but even more important to have a numeric keypad because writing is tooooooooo difficult so very long (
a voice control should be there too.i hope that it will be possible thanks

  22. Dear Konttori,

Since you seem to know a lot about the N9, I would like to bring to your attention a small bug in the email application. Mail for exchange works fine, but when I add a second email that requires information on the outgoing server the programme does not let me do that without adding a username, i.e. the programme requires that I give a username also for the outgoing server. Annoying problem, since if I add a username emails are not sent .... (at least I think that is why there is an error message when I try to send emails from this other account).

    Best regards,

    M

  23. In the facebook comment window when you want to cancel making a comment a simple gesture of swiping the keyboard down should be the way it is done. Also the little arrow button in some applications is unnecessary because you could do the same by swiping backwards from where the animation brought the window forth. Just like what you do in gallery app when browsing pictures. The animation would guide you and differentiate from the swipe to background gesture.

  24. @Newur:
Yes, clock hit area might be the entire area indeed.

    @mike7b4:
Browser toolbar in landscape should indeed be at the bottom. We are planning to get it to autohide in 1.2, but no promises (it's not on the top of the to-do list)

Event feed scroll position remembering: It will remember your position if you open a feed item and the swipe from the side and you'll be at the original position. But when you pan in homescreens, the paradigm dictates that we always show the top area of each view. Sorry.

Media player album to show album and not play random track. I could not agree more. I have been whining about that since spring.

Magnifier works in 1.1 much better than in 1.0.

    ReplyDelete
  25. @GL: You don't have a rotten battery. The applet just has a threshold of saying when the idle consumption is so high that you won't get near optimal standby time, but less. The variance is greatly dependendent how misbehaving the apps & bg services happen to be. N9 is slightly uncontrolled system compared to WP of iphone (for the good and bad).

@Freddo: our input method framework (MALIIT) http://wiki.maliit.org/Main_Page is very flexible input framework and putting T9 there should be easy peazy. Come to think of it, I've even seen it. ANyway, won't come from Nokia, but you could easily get some other developer to do it.

@Keinbing: Folders will come in 1.2 to home screen. And it's not only apps that need it. If you start using bookmarks a bit more, it's really irritating to not to have bookmarks. Guys in Oulu say that the work should be complete for the feature, so it's about 3 weeks to have decent polish on it. It's one of the "big" features of 1.2

Wifi reception was one of the issues where we had to be dancing on the SAR boundaries. Although wifi in general has been improved by leaps and bounds in 1.1. For me at least, the reception is now perfectly good.

    ReplyDelete
  26. @Stefan P: We did make swipe to close as default in 1.1. For the exact reasons that everybody agrees. We actually made the feature just in time for the launch event (like few days before it), and while everybody loved it, we weren't sure that do we make it as default or not. So, being rather on the safe side, we put it off by default. Then after longer period of use, we cannot live without it anymore, and all resistance for having it on by default was gone by the end of the summer. In 1.2, the close will also switch to just close the window, so, it should be exactly what you want. We added some visual hint that close is about to happen so that the switcher view wasn't necessary anymore. Originally we rooted user there in swipe-to-close case so that user would see the window closing and hence undestand that the action actually toggled closing. Anyway, by default in 1.1 and more logical and visual in 1.2.

The switches are tappable, at least in 1.1.

We have now two distinct players: music and movie. I think music player is much better than the one in N900, except for missing dlna, and the poor main view album cover UX blooper.

    ReplyDelete
  27. @vkvraju:
1.1 is all about reliability, performance and polish. 1.2 is all about adding new features. As it turned out, 1.1 already had plenty of features, mostly due to slipped schedule.

@StefanP: Yes, we could think about disabling touch interaction for the side margins.

@Keinbing: I think graphic equalizer would be better served as a standalone app. (show effects on currently being played back music)

@Weirdfisher: Certainly more effort will be put, but no more products. Plan is of course that the qt as a development platform continues

@thkent: upcoming calendar notifications has been discussed a lot. I can't remember why it's not there, but there was some reason for it...
No comment on the flash support.

@PekkaK: There is "universal copy/paste" in 1.2. Of course there is partial copy paste already in 1.0 and 1.1.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @Viipottaja: There was no conspiracy behind the delay, just fuck ups on multiple different things that were all found one at a time. In HW, SW and production. If I compare this with N900 sales start, we knew all the issues n900 would have pretty much a month before we hoped to make a sales release, then on the last days we agreed that what we have done so far isn't good enough, and delayed it by 2 weeks or so. But it was perfectly trackable. On N9 these issues were coming totally from the blue sky on last minute. One at a time. Fluke of bad luck. I hope you understand that I don't want to be more exact about the issues.

jl: numpad I already answered. Voice control was in the cards, but we eventually dropped it. Not coming, sorry.

@drzuck: I hope the issue is solved already. Please create a bug to : www.developer.nokia.com/bugs

That goes to everybody else as well. If you are interested in helping prioritize 1.2 / 1.3 releases, make bugs there now and as soon as possible. Also contact nokia care for the feature requests / complaints and we'll act on them. (google for nokia care for the phone numbers / feedback forms)

Humm... perhaps I should post these answers to my blog as well in a bit more formulated way.

  31. I would love to be able to tell the music player to start playing from a certain position - think podcast players.

I can of course do my own music interface quite easily thanks to Qt Components and the multimedia components, but then I would loose BT control which I don't want to. And having multiple interfaces for playing audio content just sucks in general.

    Thanks.

  33. Hi Konttori, thank you for this informative post!

I have some questions that hope you can answer:

    1. Is there any updates coming / planned for the video player? (such as smaller thumbnails or list view etc) Large thumbnails makes it very annoying once you have like 30+ videos on my N9 64GB.

    2. Is there a plan for Windows Live Messenger support in the Accounts? or is there plans for any extra Accounts support at all in PR1.1 or PR1.2?

    3. Is there going to be voice with street names for the navigation? (Symbian has it but N9 does not)

    4. Has Nokia contacted WhatsApp team to make one for the N9? (it really is the best way to chat and send/receive photos right now and many aren't buying the N9 coz it doesn't have it)

    Thank you!
    Jay

  34. Thank you for your answers Konttori.

There is now a big uproar in the forums that N9 cannot play HD 720p video because it lack the hardware. Attempts to play HD video result in huge lag. This is inferior to N8 which has the hardware to play it. But the Nokia official specs for N9 says it can play HD 720p video. What gives?

    http://europe.nokia.com/find-products/devices/nokia-n9/specifications

    ReplyDelete
  35. Keinbing,

N9 plays HD 720p videos just fine. It just needs to be encoded correctly as the hardware cannot decode the more demanding profiles.

I can confirm that my N9 can play 720p resoltion xvid videos without issues. Also, it can play 720p H264 base profile videos without issues regardless of the container. (mkv/mp4 etc) However, it seems the DSP cannot handle H264 main or high profile so it becomes very choppy/laggy.

  37. Hello Konttori

    Bought my N9 Oct13!

When is the first update coming?

And is the version going to be.. 1.2? My N9 says that it already has 1.2 version.

I just reported a problem to nokia care about mail for exchange sync problem (it always syncs only one time and after that "can't connect the server).

Nevertheless after using six years only qtek/htc phones, this is the best phone ever! Thank you!

  38. Hi,

N9 is a beautiful device. but Meego lack the punch of Iphone and Android and even Symbian.

Any one conform the below updates will come on meego

    1) Video Calling Support
    2) There should be some delay in the notification before opening the page like how it is in video gallery.
    3) forward and reward option while playing video.
    4) touch sense on Chat Window should improve .
    5) Email sync every 5 minutes.
    6) Bookmark should be folder ed or integrated with Browser
    7) Java support
    8) Adobe Flash support
    9) More HD GAMES
    10) Video call integration on Skype.
    11) Back key and Copy paste
    14) 4 th and 5 th Homescreen if possible
    15)

  40. Hi Konttori!

I think quite many corporations are using WPA + LEAP.
N9 doesnt seem to support that. Is LEAP on the roadmap
or should I write a feature request to somewhere?
Would Nokia Care be the right place?

    Thanks for the fantastic product!

@ShootSpeak: I found out (the hard way) that only the baseline .mp4 (H.264) video is accelerated properly. Other formats are listed, but baseline is the one that works. Hopefully those will be solved, I don't fancy recoding everything just for Harmattan.

  42. so far the problems i met with n9 are:

    1. Facebook apps not stable as east crash.

    2. Can't check in with fb.

    3. Can't update my status in Availability.

    4. i can't search my email. (din found search in mail)

    5. doesnt have push notification for fb.

i hope can put the lightness bar into the status bar ( i mean when we tap on the top bar , so that we can easily adjust the lightness)
and also the bluetooth can just easily turn on from there instead of tap and go into the bluetooth settings.

i found that the speaker not so loud , i hardly hear what my friends saying in the phone....

  43. jl: thanks a lot for your time, it's a luck that we can discuss about all those things. A pity for voice control and integrate numpad, anyway i noticed a few important things:

    - we cant edit phone numbers that we have dialled. For ex, i dial 0227855656 but the good number was 0227845656. I can copy the first number i dialled and paste it (in a new call window) but i cant change just a number, i have to erase everything. I think this is very important
    - it would be nice to deactivate ALL the email sync in one time, maybe at the same place of the skype/fb status
    - during a conference call it would be nice to have the possibility to see who is participating and possibility to close a call with a specific person
    - possibility in skype to see only connected people
    - when i'm playing to GOF2 i can't swipe away: normal?
    Thanks

  44. Annoying Mail for Exchange-bug with the N9:

This annoying problem seems to be large-scale with the N9 devices. Here's how it works (read: Doesn't work)

I had my device running with MfE from thu 13.10 until this morning (17.10) when it dropped. I've been following this problem with our company's Mobile-guys, and the thing is that everything is working normally at the server, policies etc. I've removed and re-installed my Exchange-account four times to my N9, it works for the 1-2 first sync-times, and after that the connection drops to the Exchange-server. The mobile-guys said that my device does not even connect to the Server, normally the cycle is within 30 min, if it is working normally.

I am totally frustrated, and im hoping that Nokia will come up with a patch soon to fix this issue, as a seven hundred euros worth of equipment SHOULD NOT have these kind of bugs.

Other mail-accounts works normally (POP3, IMAP)..

  45. Mr. Konttori,

    i have several short questions:

    will we see:

    -SWYPE
-app store for symbian ported to Meego
-any major developers committed to providing apps in the near future to it
-what is the solution if your phone gets locked and if i dont have the code to unlock it
-how many of N9 has been produced and shipped to markets?

its a gorgeous phone nonetheless. i hope the stance of Nokia/Elop will change in terms of supporting this phone as everyone has fallen in love with it. like someone said, if this has been the iphone 5, the world would have been drooling on it and rightfully so.

    thanks again for your tips.

  47. @Me: (Nice nick by the way), maps and drive will likely have quite low amount of improvements after pr1.1.
@Jouni: I cannot disclose any dates. First update is labeled PR1.1, second PR1.2 and so forth. Currently you have PR1.0 (a.k.a. sales release). I really appreciate your thanks.
@qais abrar ain: Video calling may or may not come, I'm not sure atm. You can seek already in video playback. You can set email to be even always up-to-date, and there is a 5 minute sync option as well afaik. I already answered on the bookmarks and folders. Java support is not going to come officially. Flash support may come. More games will definitely come, but none is HD, as the screen is WVGA. Copy paste exists already, universal copy paste is a feature of pr1.2. Back key? come on, it's a abomination on all platforms, windows included. What would you put to 4th and 5th home screens?
@Pavex, I am not sure of LEAP. I did a quick search in bugzilla and we have no bugs for that. Only explanations are that 1.1 has flawless implementation or there is no support. I tend to lean on the latter. Write a request to nokia care.
@jl: Good comments, I'll pass them forward. In skype you can probably select from menu and choose order by status. GOF2, like other fullscreen games usually deactivate swipe during the active mode. Press pause button and then you can swipe. It's intentional. We have API that allows apps to define specific regions on the sides where swipes won't work. Games usually disable it completely when in active mode to make sure no accidents happen.
@Ulti-Make: Sounds like a bad situation. Probably fixed in 1.1, as it has tons of exchange fixes, but just to make sure, perhaps you could create a bug to https://www.developer.nokia.com/bugs . I would like to say when 1.1 comes out, but cannot.
@Saleh: Swype is coming soon. App store for symbian is never coming to meego. Cannot comment about 3rd party developers. If your phone is locked and you don't remember the lock code, you need to reflash it completely. Or try >10 times and it should wipe itself of all user data (may depend on user settings)

  48. Hi Konttori!

Thank you for your prompt reply related to LEAP support! I have written now to NCare. Lets see what happens althought I have same feeling as you do since it's was not implemented into N950.

It's true that it's a bit oldish but it's still very widely used.

Just curiosity: as you wrote earlier PR1.0 was frozen already springtime, has PR1.1, and maybe even PR1.2, been ready also for some time? Are you able to comment has PR1.1 been shipped to developers?

Any comments of new features coming with 1.1 or 1.2? Would like to hear some hype :)

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Konttori, do you have any idea if there's any updates/fixes coming to the video decoders? The N9 features list h.264 BP/MP as supported, but MP(Main Profile) stutters a bit when b-frames are used. It's pretty odd, because b-frames are quite "simple" when talking about decoding complexity, so there isn't a good reason for it. It looks like a bug to me.

How about adding also possibility to add persons as "application shortcuts" on applications window? The same way as bookmarks are shown.

  52. Thanks for some great insight, Konttori!

The thing I'm missing in the Drive app is Favourites. I wrote more about it in the penultimate paragraph over here:

    Nokia N9 Review

Is this going to be added?

Another annoying thing/bug I've noticed is with the Facebook account. It seems to forget password for it and ask it very often. Sometimes several times during the day. This happens both on my N950 and N9. Has anyone else noticed this too?

But once again, thanks so much for all this great info.

  53. Konttori thanks. About skype there is no menu inside skype neither in the config to order by status. In fact i can see this option in the contact list. Its good but in this case i cant see anymore my bookmarked contacts that are usually on the top. The online friends could appear above the bookmarked contacts?
For me in this case bookmarked friends could appear more little, like 2 contacts per line!!

About the problems/bugs in my last post i had, the 1.1 should solve them?

    I have other few ideas/optimizations :
    - in contact list i have my phone contacts and skype contacts. It would be nice that the only-skype contacts are with a skype icon.
    - i have about 900 contacts and to go from A to Z its long. We could find maybe little arrows that bring us on top or at the bottom of the page. Or even better the little point that appear on the right when scrolling the contacts should be touchable to go faster where we want.

And then a question: is there a way to have automatic feed in the notifications?

    Thanks for all!

  55. I desperately needs to be able to share photos on Twitter! I can't believe this was left out of the shipped units. It is essential!

And also I would very much like to be able to receive push notifications on mentions and retweets in the Twitter app. And preferably also searches. Will we see that coming?

And how long will we have to wait for the first update?

I was a very long iPhone user and now changed to Nokia N9 (my second nokia after 3210 a few years ago). I'm quite happy with the new phone, also the os is just great. nevertheless I'm missing some things:

    - avatar: why we can set avatars for friends, but when they call us the photo is not showing up?
    - Videocall, specially for Skype
    - Whatsapp, nowadays an essential app which provides free messages on any devices
    - world clock
    - app for stocks etc (should be standard for a smartphone)

are those things considered for a future update? Or maybe already available (I'm still a newbie in regard of Nokia..;) )

    ReplyDelete
  58. I really enjoy to use N9, it's currently the best phone on the market!

I'd be extremely happy, if you guys could add few features for calendar reminders, like possibility to choose snooze time by touching/clicking snooze button multiple times eg. first touch 5 min, second touch 10 min etc.

Also automatic snooze would be nice. If you don't react to some reminder alert, then it will automatically snooze for xx min.

    These could be in setting.

    Keep up good work!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Marco, regarding Whatsapp, it's a third party software so there is little Nokia can do if they don't want to port and the developer has already said they won't. Yes, it's a real shame because Whatsapp is considered essential these days. Hopefully they will change their mind when the installed base of N9 grows bigger.

There's already an app for World Clock in Ovi store and a stock app in My-Meego.com which pulls data from Google Finance.

  60. about the 'allow background connections' settings for both Mobile Network and Internet Connections (WIFI), is it possible to set different value for each of them, i.e. I want the option to be off when I am on Mobile Network but on when I am on Internet Connections (WIFI).

    ReplyDelete
  61. Does any of the updates (1.1 or 1.2) contain any fixes to the onboard Facebook application? At it's current state it is pretty much unusable. Freezes, lags, has some major flaws (for example regarding fbook-messaging). I'm way happier with just touch.facebook.com, but that isn't integrated with the feeds -view.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Thanks Konttori for all the answers so far!

Here's a few things I'd like to see on my N9:

    -Birthday notifications in calendar
Just like on S40 phones, were you could add day of birth and the calendar would know how old the person gets.

-When pressing some persons profile icon while in facebook chat, it will show "(unnamed)" on the profile, can't merge it with contacts.

    - Ability to open/download documents via browser.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Other points:
    - loudspeaker is very low, my n95 loudspeaker was much much better, any way to have a louder sound??

    - if i want to send a phone number of a friend to another contact i can send the "contact card". Thats good, but on some phones people dont realize they received a contact card.Or we just want to insert the number inside an sms. Solution: it would be nice, if inside the contact (with no need to edit the contact) pressing on the number (or email or any contact info) we could just copy what we need.

    - battery: i dont think i received a notification when battery is finishing. I'm wrong? I'm always suprised finding my phone closed.

Then i have a few questions:

    - when the ovi suite/nokia suite will be compatible with n9 to synch the n9 online?
    - i know that you told us that no numpad will be launched neither voice control, but its really a contradiction to have a so powerful phone with many functionnalities and not be able to write something correctly without being a woman

    bugs:
    - as i told you the activation with double tap doesnt work each time
    - yesterday i was to the fitness, (my phone was in the cloakroom) when i finished i was happy to show my n9 to an iphone fan....but internet didnt work (facebook app and the browser)! I had to close the phone an re-open it and then it was ok....bad advertising
    - yesterday i received an sms and i didnt received a notification :(
    - facebook app is quiet long to open.

Thanks again to read our comments
    thanks again!

  65. @Pavex: 1.1 is now out for developers, so the exact day when it's for general public will start to depend on operators and regions.
308 task or features were completed for 1.1.
Low power mode enhancemens, battery charging and silent profile are now shown in there. TOns of NFC and connectivity improvements. Performance enhancements, visual tuneups (e.g. toolbar has a shadow now). Splash screen has been taken to wider use. Color management is less nervous than before (neutral sRGB space color palette is now used always, except in clearly outdoor situatios, when oversaturation is applied to adjust how eye desaturates content in brightness). Lock screen music controls have been added. Swype keyboard has been added, and keyboard switching is very smooth with swipe gesture. 1.1 is all about being faster, stronger, bettter. It succeeded on all metrics, reliability, use time, performance, long period use. All metrics for 1.1 are simply outstanding.

@Pavex: 1.2 is not frozen, so I won't comment on its content. However, it is officially feature enhancement release, so, it contains a lot of new things.
    @Deegee: 1.2 has decoder enhancements for h264.
@Manu: Contacts as shortcuts is possible, simple to be done, but not in the books at the moment. Please write to nokia care about that. And create a bug.
@Sassler: Drive has recent places, you'll have to live with that, I'm afraid. Facebook issue is very annoying indeed. I think it was solved on last days of 1.1, but I could be mistaken. We did talk a lot about it then.
@JL: I like the idea of "smaller" bookmarked contacts. Use the side fast scroll bar to navigate quickly to the top and bottom. Put your finger on the right side of the screen, near the edge and start moving it up/down. I don't understand what you mean by automatic feed in notifications?
@hxka: yes, there will be also non-nsu images afaik.
@X-Hund: Hmm... I'll relay the wish. Might be in already, I've never used that. However, push notifications I'd love as well. They were supposed to come, but, yeah, I don't see them either.
@jake: Sorry, widgets based home screen is not coming. It's against the paradigm we aimed with the current 3 view homescreen. You should place your wifes image to lock screen bg. Open gallery, open image and select set as background.

    ReplyDelete
  66. @Marco: Hmm.. perhaps coming in 1.2. No comments on video call. whatsapp has replacements on platform already and we offer deeper integration. I would assume more services to be integrated soonish. Stocks apps to ovi store. Chinese edition has one by default though.
@Jeffrey04: Good idea, but not going to happen. I too would love that.
@Matti-Juhana: Facebook has tons of fixes in both 1.1 and 1.2. I'd say it's bearable in 1.1.
@Zarsky: I'm not sure if the birthday support is coming or not. I think it is, but not sure. Please raise to nokia care and raise the other issue as well. Documents will only be opened in the documents application, not inside browser, sorry (although, I like it that way, so I'm really not that sorry).
@jl: yeah, sucks to have low loudspeaker. Buy one of these: http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/21/nokias-play-360-bluetooth-speaker-uses-nfc-daps-to-pair-with-yo/ (just kidding, I truly also hate the low volume). N82 had great loudspeaker. If I recall correctly, higher volume was causing some bad resonance on the device and that's why it is like it is in n9. Universal copy paste is coming in 1.2. Battery notification was tuned for 1.1 and should come every 2 minutes while in call, every 5 minutes when display on and every 30 minutes when display off. Swype keyboard should help you in writing, as well as turnign device to landscape. And stil somebody should do numeric T9. Double tap was re-tuned a bit for 1.1. It's a bit more reliable again. Facebook starts faster in 1.1.
@Et3rnal m!nd : 1.1 has lock screen controls. It's in the top of the screen and at least I'm pleased with how nicely a nuance the controls look. Currently playing song is on big friendly letters, replacing clock when you are playing music.

  69. Thank you so much for engaging with the n9 users. The n9 is probably the best *thing* i have ever owned.

Some suggestions though, that you could pass along. The web browser would be more useful if you could open a link in a new window, but in the background (without interupting what you are doing)

Also, click web from the app tray should open a new window, instead of returning me to the window i already have open. If i wanted that window, id use the switcher.

Finally, there is a bug. If you swipe away an app like twitter or facebook while it is still loading, it takes you to the multitasking switcher, instead of where you came from. This is annoying, because you cant just have it load in the background while you read the rest of your feeds.

    Thanks again!

Also, i often accidentally open twitter or facebook when i am just trying to scroll through

  70. The N9 is an innovative and inspiring device and it's been a long time since Nokia has produced a model which excites users. It's a pity that Elop won't sell N9 in major markets in order not to compete with Nokia's upcoming WP7 phones. But will denying customers access to buy the N9 result in them flocking to WP7? I don't see how this is going to happen. Those who want the N9 are going to buy it anyway from online sources, they are not going to buy a WP7 phone just because the N9 isn't sold in their country. Why can't Elop accept a multi-platform strategy instead of putting all the eggs in the WP7 basket? It doesn't make sense. Isn't a sale of N9 also a sale for Nokia?

Elop's strategy is a strategy of desperation. He wants to be proven right for choosing WP7 by hook or bu crook. Elop has done all he can to beat down N9's mass market appeal. I guess the staff in Nokia who worked hard to create Meego must be pretty disappointed, huh?

Anyway, sorry for this rant. I just had to let it out. And thank you Konttori for interacting with us.

I just have one thing i've been wondering about since i got my hands on my N9.
Why did you guys exclude ipv6-support from the kernel? I mean, even the iPhone runs with IPv6 nowadays.. and it shouldn't be too hard to get there, right? Just a thought. :-]

And yes, splendind blog and comments so we get a little more info. :)

The N9 is certainly a nice device but I'm a bit worried about one thing, namely SIM card changes, as it rendered both my email accounts (gmail and one Pop3 account) unusable on the device.
No prompt either for providing the credentials again. Had to perform a full reset and reconfigure the accounts from scratch.
    Is that a known bug?

    - loudspeaker : i understand that maybe for music the loudspeaker maybe is not enough good, so you limited the loudness. But i need it to speak sometimes and the sound its so low that finally i dont use it! It would be nice to make higher volume at least for calls! (and ill think if i'll buy or not the loundspeaker loool)
    - for smaller bookmarks it would be nice, even 3 per row
    - copy (to paste in another place) an info from a contact (mail, phone) without editing that contact
    - what about a skype icon in contact list for only-skype contacts?
    - when we will be able to sync the N9 with nokia online (ovi)?

    Thanks again for your patiente!!

    2. SwipeManager is great, but it's missing locking. It would be nice if we could lock phone with a single touch. I don't want to use physical buttons anymore ;)

    3. What do you think about possibility to choose calendar reminder snooze time by touching/clicking snooze button multiple times eg. first touch 5 min, second touch 10 min etc.

I remember this feature was in old Nokia phones years ago and I have been missing this feature since then :)

    ReplyDelete
  82. Hey Konttori! I love the fact that you are talking about these things here, it feels so good to actually get some semblance of information after a long time of sadness with the N8.

    Few questions:

Why in the WORLD doesnt the answering of calls when the phone is locked work like this:

You see incoming call, and are faced with 4 swipe interactions:

Swipe from right - answers call
Swipe from left - silence call
Swipe from top - reject call
Swipe from bottom - unlock device

This seems so natural to the UI and so much less hassle than having to unlock the device then pressing the answer key. You can do these gestures without looking at the phone at all, which makes it fit very well into the concept of the UI imo.

Im just surprised it isnt included allready. Did you find some reason to not do this, or was it never on the table?

I did, however, put it on the IdeasProject:

    http://www.ideasproject.com/ideas/12265

Im also curious about wether or not the browser will have an ability to choose Desktop User Agent in the future? Mobile sites offer a Desktop View link generally, but its a real hassle to have to load first the mobile version, then find the link and then load the full version.

And lastly (ill shut up after this, I promise):

When entering text in textboxes the browsers, such as the one I am writing in right now, the screen doesnt center on the typing at all, you cant see what you are writing most of the time. In addition theres no way to scroll within the textbox.

Any idea if this is being looked in to?

Thank you SO MUCH for what you are doing here, I deeply appreciate it.

  85. After using the handset for about a week, I start to encounter some issues with the handset.

The mail does not work with microsoft exchange. Basically it will show the error after you initiated first sync. I would need to toggle Non-provisional device off only be able to initiate the subsequent sync and toggle the option on again to initiate another sync. So it would be extremely fiddling everytime I want to sync my Microsoft exchange account.

The feed home screen, there isn't any way to control interval of pulling feeds from twitter, fb and AP news. The setting available right now are only applicable to feeds manually added. Another thing is that, I can't filter through the feeds shown on the homescreen for example only twitter feeds instead of all.

The phone slows down a lot whenever feeds are being pulled or when it just connected to Skype, google talk and fb chat (updating contact status I assume).

FB and Google talk always give me password incorrect error when I first try to connect, it will only work after 2nd and sometime 3rd attempt to connect. Another google talk issue is that, it’s not able to detect Nimbuzz or 3rd party app that supports voice call for google talk as available to voice talk. Thus can’t initiate call though can still receive call from them.

I’ve not tried mkv video yet but I tried one thing I’ve never expect it to fail. Videos from N8!! I transferred the videos taken by N8 (using the beta camera app which supports 30fps video shooting) and it will not play smoothly, it just stutters all the time. Videos of 25fps from N8 plays without problem though.

Finally, I also notice the RAM is very low even when just booted up, showing only 100++ MB left. Is this normal?

    ReplyDelete
  86. And one more thing, the Maps appication, there is no way to organise my favourites into several collections, while that's not exactly a big deal, the biggest problem with Maps is that I can't search my favourite. Therefore I needed to scroll through a long list of POI in order to pick the one I wanna use.

  88. Thanks from the heart for making N9 a reality and answering questions! Getting an N9 for my wife today.

Re "signing myself away from the meego":
Would it not be intelligent for Nokia to have a dual OS strategy:
    1) W7 for corporate/high end use
    2) Meego for general/alternative use (essentially the replacement for Symbian)

I am sure the market would understand and appreciate that strategy. Samsung, HTC and others are successful with the W7 + Android approach.

Are you allowed to comment on this suggestion?

  89. Konttori, is it a "feature" of the N9's amoled screen that black text on white (for example web pages) cause "bleeding" of very slightly pink lines from the text? Or is this some kind of manufacturing (or very weird software) fault?
And the weird thing is that all text on screen doesn't cause this. It is like there is a invisible line, that when it intersects with black causes the bleeding. Here's a ms paint illustration :)

  90. I encounter another issue relevent to N9's update mechanism for apps. I know that Nokia Store support update for apps now, however, it doesn't show in a centralized area where you can just choose update all. I have to go to All Downloads and scroll through the list to check through any updates available

Secondly, when I go to Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Updates, I would expect that hitting the refresh button would pull all the relevant updates in to the screen. However, that did not happen as it tells me that the device is up to date where I find so many of the apps I installed on Nokia Store already pushed for new updates.

    - No plans for an FM transmitter implementation like on the N900?

    - Email client is among the best but as the N900's one, it can't recognize or handle phone numbers in the core of the email...symbian Anna has this...

    - Slide to event feature is cool but when using the device with one hand it becomes tricky to do the gesture, any chance to slide vertically the event instead of slide it horizontally or let the choice to the user via an option menu on settings.

    - Any camera features/fixes hints? Is zooming on video coming? Led flash on video coming?

    - Intelligent speed dialing (like on N900 or Symbian^3) is coming? i don't like really like to do it from universal search application as there's no filter, i'd like to have a intelligent search for contact from speead dialing menu, i was very upset to see that my N8 has it and not my N9

    - How about a bigger picture when someone is calling? we have to use this outstanding screen for something useful right? everything is swipe away ok, but it should be everything is a eyesight away:)

    - Answering call is becoming tricky nowadays ! I like the idea to slide up then click to answer, it protects us from accidental answering, but why not making it one step task? Like slide up to answer, as simple as that :)

    - Use more screen space to show action on call, actual size of icons/buttons don't much with the screen resolution/size, it's relatively small.

    - In agenda, why not add 'tap to create an event" as on symbian^3' having to click on "+" to add an event IMHO don't stick with the "one touch" paradigm of Maemo5 and Harmattan...

    - In some menu like Wifi connection or bluetooth menu, when choosing a network or device to pair with, i have to select this device and then click on "connect", why just make it a one step as on maemo5?

    - How about show calendar events on lock screen when double tap, it enables to have a sneak preview of your upcoming event with just touching your device.

    - On maps application, if i choose to walk or drive to a location, i can't choose from "contact" or from "my favorite" saved landmarks, for the first i have to do it from the contact application, for the second i have to do it from favorite sub-menu on the maps application...this is not the best implementation i've ever seen, even symbian did this "partially" better :)

That's all i want to have a perfect N9 and use it as my main device reliably :)

@Cono : about button-less locking, i have this on my iPhone (with the help of a tweak) and it's great, if Nokia don't implement it by default, you should ask the application developer for that ^^

  95. Good idea of slai to answer calls! in fact it would be much easier!

I want to know if actually its possible to sync my phone with ovi online?

It would be great if we can synch our phone by wifi!!

Anyone know if we can make vpn? or even better like logmein control our pc from internet?

Do I have to wait the update 1.1 to buy apps? When we are going to make the update, do we have to install all the apps again?

Sometimes I'm at home and i'm still connected to my phone company and not to my wifi

  96. Please, let us change the colour of the clock when the screen is in standby mode!

I want it red so it doesn't light up my room at night but I can still see the time. And I want it to match the interior of my BMW.

It will take one of your coders 20 minutes to implement this into the settings. Or make an Qt app that does it!

The N9 is beutyful but its browser stinks, look at Htc thats a good browser, and I mis callendar like In 8810, and contats data synks with the callendar.
If there's not comming a Update soon I will sel the N9 and get a IPhone 4's.

  100. @StaticNoiseLog:
Well, that should not be the reason. Microsoft is driving WP also heavily to consumer segment and tieing in it to XBOX ecosystem for gaming.
And no, I would not be commenting on reasons, whether I know them or not.
@DeeGee: N9 has Pentile OLED screen. You have no idea how much time I've spent taking macro photos of the sub pixel rendering artefacts. We spent a lot of time working with the display manufacturers in making the best possible sub pixel rendering for pentile. Basically, on this PPI, you cannot get traditional RGB matrig, you need to get, pentile RGBG, where B and R are 2/3 of a pixel size. Every pixel has green element and either R or B. Green controls the luminosity for the most part to human eye. As R and B are big, human eye actually even sees those pixels, and that's what you see as red bleeding on left side of sharp lines and green bleeding on right sides. Oh, crap, now I looked at you photo. No, that should not be happening to my knowledge. I'll take a look tomorrow on your example case on both displays we are shipping with (we had plenty of versions of the displays during the making on N9, some times to the better, some times to the worse)
@kaien: Yes, that sucks. Afaik, guys are working on that for 1.2.
@Saleh, glad to hear that you like the post and the product. No image stabilization, it would require a gyro, which iphone has and n9 doesn't. Seems like 1.2 has some sweet camera improvements though (but no comments on what, sorry).
@Taufiq Sun: Should come soon, afaik. There was a last minute delay just now for some really fucked up reason (totally business reason, not SW quality).

    ReplyDelete
  101. @SlipKoRnSaad: Dude, that's a long list. No EQ for official player, hopefully 3rd party. FM transmitter is not even possible afaik. FM receiver is possible. N9 email client should allow you to manage phone calls from emails. No hints about camera improvements. They are coming, but no comments. Pull down the contacts list in speed dial to get search field. Bigger picture would be nice. Not sure if they got it done on call ui side. Lock screen has the support for full screen avatars for incoming call. 1.2 at the earliest. Answering a call used to be a single gesture and then somebody started complaining that they don't understand how to answer with text message (swipe to the side and click on mute, then text). Anyway, I really hate the current two step approach, but it was design call. I tried resisting it on multiple occasions if that's of any consolation to you. I agree on your agenda suggestion. Dunno why it was not done like you say. I'll send an email to the architect. Next calendar events would be something to improve indeed. Won't be done however (shame). Drive and maps would benefit from that indeed.
@jl: you can buy apps already. You can sync in wifi. VPN support will come to ovi store.
@HaugMedia: You need a new theme. The color and font of the clock are themed, and can be re-themed very easily. It takes 2 minutes to do. I can make an example for you tomorrow.

@Konttori: Re the display issues DeeGee illustrated, there's a whole thread about those over at T.M.O. - Also, I tried to make a video; it's harder to see on video than it is when the device is in your hands, but I guess it describes the problem better than words.

  105. Hi Konttori, just a few questions. =)

    1. Is there any upcoming changes to the Video player app itself? (such as feature or UI enhancements)

    2. I use the lock code method to unlock and it's very laggy. Sometimes, it's so laggy that it can't keep up with the numbers I'm pressing. Is this being looked into?

    3. Sometimes when I swipe left or right at the home screen, it can get extremely laggy and choppy. (like 5fps or worse it seems) Is this something that can be fixed or improved?

    4. Can the lock screen be modified so that you can swipe off the lock screen even with non-edge swipes? It can get really annoying trying to swipe off the lock screen from the edge when using only 1 hand etc. It makes it more difficult and less comfortable to unlock. (glad I can edit the mce.ini to unlock using double-tap of the power button at least..)

    5. The top status bar can get really laggy also. Even with zero apps open, the animation is often not smooth. Also, it sometimes pops up when I try to swipe top-down to close an app. It's very easy to accidently activate it. Can this be changed so the status bar drops down only when you double-tap? It would make it less prone for mistakes.

    6. Will smart dial be implemented into N9? It is sooooo much easier to just find and dial someone with smart dial. Lack of smart dial is a huge minus on the N9 for me.

    7. Is there any plans for updates to the N9 web browser? (such as favorites, history, options to change user agent, disable auto-rotation etc etc)

    8. Is there any possibility of something like this for the N9 UI?

  108. @Ossi, yeah, commented already on that thread, issues look like they are simple OLED issues, so common, not abnormal.
@Keinbing: Themes can change the font. It's a shame ovi stoe doesn't have any yet. As a resort, you can go, set deveoper mode on and edit /usr/share/themes/blanco/constants.ini file (from top of my mind) and set the fonts there to different size, then reboot and voila. Anyway, all that should be very simple with theme.
@Tiago Moura: Android compatibility is not available yet, might be, might not. You could try contacting those application developers directly, however, I would assume a port of pidgin or similar would happen pretty soon to provide whatsup level of communication.
@Shootspeak, I'll answer later. Too late tonight.

Amazing blog, read it all the time. In the U.S. all of the N9 owners are having a major issue. Wi-fi hotspot is not working for us at all. I have started two threads in detail on this issue on both Maemo.org and MeeGo.com:

    http://forum.meego.com/showthread.php?p=33879#post33879

    http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...08#post1114608

Basically, Joikuspot support is saying it is Nokia's fault and to wait for an update...we at the community do not agree. I myself used the same sim card in my N900 with Joikuspot before turning it into a microsim...Joikuspot ran fine on the N900 with the same sim. Carrier-wise, Tmobile does not restrict wi-fi tethering...I have been in close communication with Joiku support, and Annie at Joikuspot knows abou the links above, but haven't heard from her in a few days now. All U.S. owners are affected by this.

I also submitted this at Nokia Dev, as Bug 575.

    http://www.developer.nokia.com/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=575

We at the Maemo and MeeGo would greatly appreciate any help for this.

  113. One thing also. The N9 preloaded facebook app is quite terrible. Is there comming improvemts on 1.1 or 1.2. I think that it's not possible to change "default" fb-application? even the web-version or the Fmobi works a lot of better than the native app..

    ReplyDelete
  114. Mr. Konttori thanks for following these comments so closely.

Moved to N9 from HTC Desire and still missing two things
    1. "Back". Sometimes it is arrow at bottom sometimes cancel at top.Sometimes it is missing. And my thumb is too short to reach top. Today swipe left and right has the same meaning. How about swipe to left? Or round counter clockwise - like MS undo icon hints. Then we would also have forward like redo is.
    2. Pin some applications always on and top of the open app screen. Calendar is good example. other option would be able configure it visible in to events list - future events.

I'm sure that design team has discussed these to death, but...still miss them. They would not break the concept as the point has now been made - this is just so close also my idea of simplicity, but sometimes too much simplicity creates some complexity. Fine dance as you know.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Any chance this can be considered to be implemented

    http://www.ideasproject.com/ideas/11642

  119. Forget my last comment, i have found a plugin that works for mac, it can be very useful for mac users: http://forum.meego.com/showthread.php?t=4761

On the N9 very often when scrolling a list (contacts for ex) it selects an entry when you wanted just to scroll the list. Same thing in the feed screen, very often it opens me the facebook app. Is too much sensitive. The PR 1.1 will improve this aspect ?

    ReplyDelete
  120. Hi again,

I hate to bring this up again but my problem with email accounts after changing SIM card has happened again, the first time it happened I had to factory reset the N9 with the second SIM card and add the accounts again (see previous post above) to fix the problem. This second time I changed back to another SIM card and the problem didn't appear at once, it actually took 7 days(!) and now the accounts won't fetch any new mail (one Gmail and one POP3). When this happens the fenix process takes a lot of CPU time to start with and then the messageserver process takes almost all CPU. Se this screenshot: http://valborg.no-ip.info/dpr/20111031168.jpg
Someone over at Maemo talk told me that the N9 handles 7 SIM cards - but only when device lock is enabled..See http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=1112868&postcount=232
Is it possible for someone to search/file a bug for this?

I've had most of my questions answered already, but I'm still waiting for the answers for Shootspeak.

    Also:
    - Will it be possible to search for text on a web page (ctrl-f)?
    - In the email client, I find my self trying to double-tap to zoom, as done in the web browser, but that doesn't work. Well, it sometimes selects text, which can be good (and would be nice in the browser too, I want both! :)).

  126. @Shootspeak:
    1. Video player won't have usability improvements. Better get a 3rd party app for those. It takes probably 200 LOC with qml and qt-mobility/gstreamer to create a better video player (usability wise) than the currently shipping one. It would be a nice hobby project for somebody. Don't get me wrong, it's perfectly OK video player if you have 10 videos, but it certainly doesn't work well enough if you have a lot of videos.

    2. On boot, the device is awfully loaded during showing of the device lock. I have done my share of complaints, but changing the boot sequence was deemed too risky to do. So, sorry, you'll be stuck with the lat at least until pr1.2.
    3. Lagggy swipes in hope have been fixed for PR 1.1

    4. It will need modifications to nokia proprietary code. So, no. It was done as it is, to make sure that consistency of swipe is the same always.

    5. Top status bar lag has been fixed for pr1.1.

    6. I have no clue what smart dial is, so, unlikely, but never say never. I don't know the finer details of the call ui.

    7. Browser has been improved heavily for 1.1, but not on the UX front. 1.2 has some feature improvements.

    8. It was discussed on the road, but deemed as distracting from the original concept of the recents screen. Needs changes to nokia proprietary code, so cannot be changed easily.

    @Kaivo:
It's much better in 1.1. I agree that the quality is sub par. It's pretty much adequate on 1.1. Not great, but OK. It's good to leave room for 3rd party apps ;)

    @Sami:

I would have loved the carouselling apps. I think I mentioned in my blog post that it's the thing I would have changed, as it would have allowed getting rid of the back button.
We discussed the pinning several times, but deemed that would have needed one special sauce we never added to the OS. And without it, it doesn't make enough sense to do. I agree that your case makes sense. We still won't do it, but it makes sense, as it would allow widget-alike experience. Perhaps I'll have one last chat about it.

    @Isaac S:
There is a gesture control tool in ovi store that allows something very similar to be done that the idea conveys. Lock screen has the controls now, so I don't see particular reason to add one more way to control music. Especially as I assume more and more people to use spotify and other online services for music consumption (which do not adhere to the platform logics anyway)

    @danneman:
Thanks, I try to spend half an hour in the evenings answering to you guys.
Exchange contacs lookup support is in PR1.2.
Old email search is not going to happen afaik.

    @JL:
This video should also help you move the contacts from iphone to n9: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhvXF2r76BQ

Mistaps are indeed very annoying. I think it's better in 1.1. Not completely gone, but noticably better.

    @Zed:
Good idea. No, great idea! I'll see what we could do.

    @Perus:
I encoutered it myself for the first time now. Fix is simple: Remove your mail accounts, then enable developer mode (settings/security/enable developer mode), then open terminal, type: rm -rf .qmf/*
(and press enter). It sucks, but this is the fix. Anyway, somebody should file a bug about it.

    @nyslipt:
I'm actually today for the fist time in a way, outsider too, as I moved officially to the forward center. At least the view is much better in Nokia House than in Ruoholahti, so my new future is looking good ;)

No search in default browser. Fennec should come soon and that should have the support.

Well, universal copy paste is the general theme that we are pushing in pr1.2, so getting rid of selection support in email is a no-no. Sorry.

Nice videos. I like this even more: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Mmexn3suGc&feature=related <-- Chinese was a insanely big effort to pull off. We did get official certification in record time in the end, so support has been done really well.

I have user a white N9 since March, but with the old coating, and clearly there was a good reason we didn't release until we had perfected the coating. My device is very scratched these days. I wish I'll be able to get a new white for myself.

    @Arthur Nunn:
You reject by swiping the call down. Or, swipe to the side to reveal the incoming call without answering to it. Only swipe up would answer directly.

    @Saleh:
Nice to see the support for ebuddy. I didn't know if was done, thanks for the link!

Just to let you know the Joikuspot issue for U.S. users who cannot create wi-fi hotspot has been solved by enabling ad-hoc in developer mode. The fix can be found here: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=79416&page=5

On another matter can anything be done about N9 Ovi store being filled with useless RSS feed apps created from a Nokia wizard? Does Nokia do any quality control before admitting apps? Maybe a separate section for these feed apps which are virtually drowning the visibility of real apps? Thanks again.

  135. Konttori,
kudos. This thread is just awesome: it has given me the best insight on the N9 of all the reviews that I've read!
I'm planning to switch back from Android to a system running Qt apps and am undecided between N8 (more mature, better camera and audio and larger ecosystem) and N9 (better screen, smoother UX). I listen a lot to podcasts, so the podcast playing experience is crucial to me for selecting my next phone. I wasn't happy with podcatcher on Symbian^1, back in my Nokia 5800 days. On Android, Acast does all what I want, but the UI is terribly convoluted. Can you tell me whether on the N9 the integrated music player or a 3rd party podcast player support the following functions:
    1. after having triggered an update, presenting a chronological list of new podcasts so that the user can select which ones to download.
    2. automatically appending recently downloaded podcasts to a playlist or otherwise offering a "play recently downloaded podcasts" function.
    3. remember the playback position on each podcast, such that if the user switches from one podcast to other podcasts or music, she can then resume the first podcast where she left it (http://www.ideasproject.com/ideas/13771). Or, alternatively, manual bookmarks in the audio/video player.
    5. buttons for skipping forward/back a predetermined amount of time (e.g. I like 30s forward, 10s back).

Also, I have a bluetooth headset with playback control buttons. In case there are multiple media players on the N9 (say the standard music player and a dedicated podcast player), to which application will the events generated by the bluetooth headset buttons, such as volume control or play/pause, be sent to? Is there something like a "currently preferred active app" in N9?

  136. Hello! Konttori - first my very bad 'english'... sorry!
but my vifes picture (foto) was not the point what I will ask you... I will not my fives picture backgroud in my N9...
and you answer: widegts is impossible. OK but how is it icon and link in extra (4.) customising homescreen...? to contacklist's peoles... wife or workfrends or ... like N97 if like N900 is not possible

  138. Konttori, great to see you answering the questions here, excellent!

Been getting lots of answers to my own questions above already, but some additional thoughts/questions:

    - The issue with buttons sizes has been already been discussed, but anyway: it would indeed be great to see button sizes adjusted according the context better. For instance, the commonly used "triggered alarm" and "answer call" screens could have much larger UI controls, there is screen space available for them and one should be able to choose the appropriate action easily in those cases. Especially annoying is to try to hit the correct button (e.g., snooze) in the morning when when still practically asleep...or maybe this is just clever UX design forcing one to really wake up as planned.

    - About the alarms: would be great to see the alarm information (+ shortcut to the alarm settings) in the top status bar when an alarm is active. It would be also useful to see alarm information on the lock screen.

    - Kinda secretly hoped to see (at least basic) support for automatic profile management and power save mode (as in Nokia Situations) integrated to the platform, but I guess this will be left to 3rd party devs.

    - The navigation model between different apps (or actually the lack of it) feels bit confusing especially between the contacts/messaging/chat apps, when starting the operation from contacts: contacts -> open one contact -> start messaging -> send a message -> try to find the way back to the contacts list to send another message to someone else. There's probably not much you could do with this due to the overall architecture, but if there's something, please at least consider doing it. Another example: for instance, in Settings -> Security -> Device lock, the Configure button opens up another app for the configuration, but after closing it would make sense to see the Device lock settings screen again, I was in the middle of doing the configuration and would like to continue it. Of course, user could swipe to other screens in between etc, but some kind of intelligent collaboration between apps in this kind of common situations would make things smoother (for users, probably causes major headache for platform developers, though).

    - A somewhat annoying feature in Contacts app: Browse contacts -> notice that two contacts somewhere in the middle of the list need merging -> open Menu -> "Merge contacts" -> the merge view opens but the list position gets reset and list is scrolled to top -> now find the relevant contacts again...

    - Some kind of "pattern unlocking" feature would be neat, typing in the lock code using standard portrait qwerty is just clumsy and slow(ish). Don't know if it's possible for 3rd party devs to implement this - if yes, then I'd guess someone is already on it. Swype might help with this, too (I've understood it's coming).

    - Multi-tasking view and closing an app via swipe-down: after closing the app with swipe-down, the multi-tasking view is shown but the closed app is not removed from the list immediately and it is the first one - the delay here is just correct to annoy the user trying to do a quick switch to another app, which moves
just when you're trying to tap it. Idea: is it possible to move the application going to get closed to be the last one when swipe-down is detected? Then its disappearance wouldn't lead to moving the other apps. The use case for me here is often: browse Twitter feed -> open a link to browser -> read the article -> close the browser with swipe-down -> go back to the Twitter app fast.

    - Related to efficient multi-tasking: being able to force the browser to load the current page in background would be great.

Keep up the great work and thanks for the awesome device!

  139. I still think its sad that theres no swipe-to-answer/reject/unlock/decline with SMS way to answer calls on the N9.

And silence by turning it face down.

It just seems so natural to the UI, and so much more effective than the current solution.

Who do I have to bribe in order to get this simply amazing ituitive function on all our N9s?

    http://forum.meego.com/showthread.php?p=33864#post33864

Is there any way Nokia can convince Mozilla to keep a strong focus on Fennec for Maemo/MeeGo/Metlemi/LinuxMobile?

I was happy to put up with no Qt/QML UI, or even no XUL theme.
But now it seems they're even ditching XUL, in favor of Android's native UX!

A very worrying turn of events... :(

  141. Really appreciate all your comments here - great to know that at least someone is interested and listening.

I noticed a bug which hasn't been reported here yet (at least I couldn't find anything related to it): I cannot login to my Nokia account. It always reports that the "service is not available". The error message comes sometimes so quickly that it probably does not even have time to open a data connection. And it won't let me create a new account, either. On the other hand, if I try to create a new account with a pre-existing username, it manages to report it is already registered. It really is annoying, as I would like to install some applications etc.

Other (known) bugs in my device:
    -MfE first-time-only sync issue
    -charging-LED issue
-does not connect to my personal IMAP mail (Sonera) with any settings, although e.g. Gmail works without problems
-RealGolf2011 launched several times by leaving half of the menu view on the screen (fixed with a couple of reboots)

Is there an option of updating the location part of the IM status automatically? I've heard that it may be problematic due to some limitations in accessing the GPS from the background apps.

  143. Hi Konttori,

There's a thread on talk.maemo.org about screen issues which I hope someone at Nokia is aware of. 12 pages and counting.

    http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=78488

It covers the pentile fringing issue, a strange black blotch issue when viewing dark grey content and aggressive ramping up and down of screen brightness. I'm suffering all three (I'm 'aegis' in that thread - a name I chose before the N9!).

  145. Hi Konttori,
I was wondering if you heard on the grapevine about rebooting issues on the N9 64GB I have had mine all of a day and it's been freezing and rebooting about 15-20 times a day. Fantastic experience when it does run but I'm about ready to fling it in a bin with frustration? A thread on Maemo is filling up with reports.http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=79576

I'd happily hold on if it was a firmware issue but if it's faulty hardware, I think it's better to return it soon.

  146. @linuxcub

You really should check meego forum 1st.
There's a "how-to" for adding BT keyboard support there.

And I assume one could apply the same principle applied there, for mice & "possibly touchpads.

  150. About to hit bed, will comment tomorrow more, but one thing:
@Cian, sounds to me like a HW failure. I would personally return the unit. We do run quite a lot of automated tests for every device on the build line, but if the issues is above the detection tolerance, (say, happens only after minutes of usage), it's unlikely to have been caught. Might be that you were unlucky. I would give it one more day and then request for a new replacement. 15-20 isn't normal. Our mean time between reboot in long period testing is months of normal usage (yeah, we do really odd and leghty automated testing for all releases, so I do know that for a fact). Your issue is HW issue.

  151. Hi!

I'm extremely impressed by your commitment to answering all kinds of questions here. Big kudos!

I have two issues; when I answer phone calls with the button on my bluetooth handsfree (this goes for both my car-kit Sony Ericsson HCB-700 and ear-piece Plantronics Discovery 925), the caller gets the last second on my ringtone on their ear. And they all comment that it's such amazing loud noise! I had the same problem on my N900...

Second and almost more annoying. Here in Norway (and as far as I know also in Sweden), we have some feature called "BankID on mobile" that authenticates you with your bank using the phone.

It's somehow in the SIM-access profile. I enter my birthdate and phonenumber in the bank, and then a message on my phone pops up, saying that this and this bank wants to authenticate me. I then press "Accept", and I get a new window where I can enter a code. When I have done this, the authentication in the bank completes.

With the N9, I usually just get the first message. When I press "Accept", nothing more happens. A few times I get to the window to enter code, but when I press finish there, the bank never completes the authentication.

I don't really know how to explain this... But it's supported on every phone I have ever owned, except the N900 (which didn't support it at all). Here it seems like it is working, it just isn't...

Is there somwhere I can file a bug about this, where it will actually be seen by the proper people? Even if it will not be fixed, it would be nice to know that the proper people at least have seen it :)

Love the phone, it's really excellent in every capacity! Very happy about it! :)

  152. Konttori , i got my n9 couple of days ago and i noticed the following issues:
Email: when you setup hotmail on the phone and when you specify only 100 emails to be downloaded on the phone this doesn't happen it keeps on downloading the hole inbox.has this been fixed in upcoming PR1.1?
-Exchange: there is no no limit option in the sync back time thus my corporate exchange email doesn't work i can only see the folders not the emails.
-loudspeaker very LOW volume compared to the n97 or n95 you even miss calls ... this needs to be looked at as well at least while you are in a call and for ringtones the volume needs to be increased otherwise there is no point having this loudspeaker... any idea if there will be any improvements to this? it is a real issue for phone conferencing...
-will Nokia implement whatsapp, Msn messenger and video calling inc skype video calling?
-ive seen a new FM transmitter app working on the n9 but apparently you need to plug in the headphones to use them as transmitting antenna any idea if this is going to be implemented?

honestly the Meego OS is great even though it still needs heaps of work but i believe once all set it will be way better then windows...

  153. Mr Konttori - thankyou very much for being open and communicative here - it's really great to have direct responses from you and hear about the processes and reasonings going on inside Nokia, as well as about forthcoming updates.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, though, but the hardware issue mentioned by Cain above seems to be more widespread than you might hope. I don't know what the tolerances generally are on phone hardware for faults, but there seems to be a number of people in a short space of time (inc. me) with the same symptoms (most but not all with phones from the same batch). There's a lot of chat on both talk.maemo and now the official Nokia forums:
    http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/t5/Maemo-and-MeeGo-Devices/n9-random-reboots/td-p/1192015
    http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=79576
    http://forum.meego.com/showthread.php?t=4820

There's comments that the issue is reminiscent of a N900 PR1.0 issue that had a soft/firmware fix https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6334

A lot of people have sourced N9s outside of traditional channels because it's not available in their countries, where a warranty fix will be a pain, so are likely to send their devices back fairly quickly, which I assume everyone wants to avoid if the issue is solvable with a driver/firmware update.

The question is - is anyone inside Nokia looking at this with a view to a software fix - or should we all just send our devices back ASAP? Attila C on talk.maemo has asked for logs, but I don't know if that's in any official capacity or not.

  154. Any idea if we can get swipe gestures to lock/standby the screen.

Eg if we're at a homescreen, swipe down to lock (if you have a lock code) and maybe swipe up to standby?

    ReplyDelete
  155. Some wishes:

1.What I am missing from my HTC Desire is the home screen. with the Android phones you can customize your home screen, change the clock, calendar, have some most frequently used programs in the home screen etc. Also quick adjustments in the sliding down top bar was handy.

2.So what I am wishing is that the facebook and twitter news feed should be in it's own separate page and weather, clock, events should be in some other separate page, and to that page you could have shortcuts for example to phone, mail,SMS, Facebook..

3.Web browser is slow and laggy, hope you fix it.

4.When I was travelling I didn't want to use internet connection so it was off. Anyway the camera kept asking me do I want to turn on the internet connection every 3-5 minutes.

5.If i leave phone dialing function page on, some bug appears when phone is going to standby/idle mode automatically.Screen keeps fading away with all kind of shit in the screen and that lasts for some minutes.

6.Idle mode clock color would be nice to adjust. Now it's too bright during the night time.

7.Facebook is too slow and buggy

8.Spotify forgets logging information. And when doing that it also destroys offline songs.

9.Better information in the Email account screen about updating emails process. Now there is only one small arrow in the right upper corner?

    10. When is the update out? :)

Are you aware of the issues with accessing Nokia Account via N9?

Many user are complaining that they can't access their Nokia Accounts and when they try via the N9 they receive "Service currently not available".

Do you have any elegant solution to the issue, since for now the only thing that fix this is to Clear the device.

  157. @mirautaj:
    - Themes are supported, just not fully. Any theme package just needs to set: "gconftool-2 -t string -s /meegotouch/theme/name " in their post installer for now (and have the recovery of gconftool-2 -t string -s /meegotouch/theme/name blanco) in prerm. Please raise an issue about this to care or bugzilla in order to get the full support. Full support would be a control panel plugin. Trivial to do, but isn't there atm.
-FUll screen avatar support is being worked on, but seems to be slipping from 1.2 content.

    @jona,
Thanks! And 1.1 should be on your doorstep really soon.

    @samized
Yeah, seems irritating. 1.1 is frozen, so either the fix is in or it's not. I'll try to raise the issue to get some activity on the bug.

    @Keinbing:
Nice so see that the "fix" was that trivial. I hope it stays that way in 1.1 as well.
Oh boy have we been discussing those rss feed wrapper floodings for months (we had also preview store that sucked in the same regard just as much). I really don't know when it will easen. I sincerely hope that's as soon as possible.

    @Saleh:
Good to hear that you got at least some version of fennec up.
And thanks for pasting the joikuspot "fix". Seems easy enough. I hope it works also in 1.1.

    @qais abrar ain:
I don't think 3G video support will ever come. We always considered it as a forgotten technology (and hence favor VOIP-alike video conferencing solutions). VPN should be coming soon.

    @arg0:
I also agree there has been lot of interesting dialogue on this thread.
I would pick N9 any and every day over N8. For your podcast needs, there are now multiple clients, both free and for a price.
You can get chronological list of newly added content in music player. Also gpodder had such a list if I recall correctly. POdcast position is remembered in all podcast clients I have been using (gpodder, podcast) between restarts of the application/phone. Gpodder had skip buttons. Only open (running) applications will be hooked into bluetooth stack, so you should have no problems with BT controls with mutiple BT applications installed on your device. If you have multiple apps running at the same time, I would assume that something will turn sour, so close the ones you don't want to use.

    @Topuz:
    1. There is a mirror application in ovi store ;) Joking aside, there will be use of it in pr1.2.
    2. There will be PR1.2 and after that comes PR1.3. Updates will continue even after that, I just don't know what they are called.
    3. To be honest, I don't know. There has been quite a lot of work put to it, but I don't know of whether it has touched the white balance.
    4. Not coming. Windows were favored to get uniform behavior for different applications. Use fennec for tabs.
    5. Yeah, low power mode is the source of notifications. LED is really not used almost for anything. Boot and shutdown use it for some visual que.
    6. I still don't know what smart dialing is. Perhaps you could enlighten me.

  158. @jake:
lol! Well, contact shortcuts were planned for home screen to be as launcher icon shortcuts. We decided to postpone that to until folder support for launcher items is complete. It's now complete, but there won't be enough time to complete the contacts side of the support for 1.2. Perhaps in 1.3.

    @linuxcub:
Seems like bluetooth keyboard works like this: http://www.meegoexperts.com/2011/11/connect-bluetooth-keyboard-n9/

    @HH:
At the very least, the buttons should simply be bigger. I agree. I wonder if we dare to do a change to that at this stage (I doubt it). Perhaps some themes will make this happen for you.
I know everybody wants to push more functionality from apps towards the framework, but it's a never ending game. Sorry, won't happen. I do agree that next alarm and next calendar alarm would be still very informative in lock screen.
There is automatic profile management application in ovi store. It's nice to leave some room for 3rd parties as well.
I SOO agree with you that the contacts navigation model was messed up.
I do think that 1.2 does address your device lock case though. Not 100% sure, but say... 60% ;)
We have automerge contacts support in 1.1, although it has some usability issues. Anyway, zillion times nicer than not having automerge at all.
Set a numeric value as your password in device lock. It makes it bearable. Just type numbers in the code and next time you need to unlock, you are presented with numeric kaypad and not qwerty. It'll be default in later releases.
PR1.2 changes the swipe down to function as direct close without going to recents/multi-tasking view. Other changes are not going to be made, as they would break the generic swipe logic too much. Sorry.
I have been asking for the same thing and it's at least in the current backlog for browser team. Don't know delivery version.

    @Slai
There is swipe down to reject/decline calls. Just put your finget to the bottom part of the bouncybouncy and push it down. It will silence the call. Then swipe to left and press the message icon key. I know it's not single gesture, but 3. So, not so nice. Silence by turning device down works in 1.1.

    @Jed:
Sorry, I don't know the details, and likely could not comment even if I did. But afaik, a proper ovi store port of fennec is in the works.
I also agree it is annoying, but understandable focus shift for them.

    @Harry:
Please create a bug about that. I did hear one of our developers having same issue when he was in italy. Try creating a totally new account with different email.
MFE is much better in 1.1. Charging leds have been fixed for 1.1. The golf issue sounds odd. Perhaps just bad luck.

    @Istarish,
There is an app for that;) Ovi store has at least some tool for it now.

    @aegisdesign:
Yeah, Seems to be related to dark conditions only. Really annoying when it happens, I agree.
I'll try to get some display expert comment to it.

    @zaqmlpxswnji:
Site didn't open, so can't comment.

    @Sami:
It gets better in 1.2. It should be always that the window you came to the window you just closed, should be in the top left corner in recents view, as it's showint the windows in reverse chronological order of usage.

    ReplyDelete
  159. @zaqmlpxswnji: It opened now. Very difficult to do at this stage. Lock screen can be replaced by 3rd parties, so in theory, you can do it. quicklaunchbar is quite a bit better in 1.1 already. you don't need to swipe-hold to open it, just a quick, but small swipe from bottom will do.

  160. Hi, me again with some other points ;)

    Ideas:
    - it would be nice when you click on top of the screen where there is access to your availability and to internet connection, if it could be also possible to directly access to network settings. In fact i leave near another country (france) and we have often to use manual connection or coming back to automatic

    - Even better, would be to be able to manage in a better way connectivity: when i'm in France (10 min from switzerland) it happen that my swissnetwork is not strong enough and the nokia choose a stronger network but french with roaming. I could go in manual but it takes time. It would be amazing if the N9 could choose always my favorite network event if the signal is low and only when signal disappear it switch to another one.

    - an idea could be to assign to the 1-9 dial phone numbers a contact (a shortcut, like in nokia n95)

    - as already said, in contact list 2 ideas: little favourites contacts (i hope you'll do it) and only-skype contacts please with a skype logo

    - be able to take a picture using the front camera

Then i noticed some important bugs, if there are bugs:
    - when i'm at home, it doesnt switch automatically to wifi all the time

    - it is possible that when there is no wifi it switch automatically to a predefined network? When i go outside i have to connect to my provider.

    - i setup a normal email account (bluewin provider),but smtp dont work, dont know why. This causes another problem: because the message cant be sent, an error appear and inbox work very slow.

    - sometimes i cant send sms after i have finished writing, i have to press 5-6 times in other places, then finally it goes

    - sometimes if 2 numbers are similar it doesnt recognize the contact. For example my own phone number is in my contact list and my voice mail number who is similar is also in the list. They are not the same but the system tell me this is the same number for 2 contacts and its not true

    - generally the phone is slow, i hope 1.1 will be faster

Thanks again Konttori for your time

    Thanks again!

    Thanks for your answer.

Now, regarding to smart dialing, you can see here to see what it is http://pocketnow.com/thought/smart-dialing-explained

    ReplyDelete
  162. @Konttori

Smart Dial is a feature which exists by default in Symbian^3/Anna/Belle phones where you can simply find a contact and dial simply by using the dial number pad. This also exists in most Android phones. Heck, even my OLD Nokia N95 8GB had it.

Here is a perfect video to show it off:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9vVxuFGGZw

Once you get used to this, all other method of contact searching to dial someone quickly is just inconvenient and inefficient. I'm surprised that you didn't know about this. =P

Anyways, it is the best way to dial someone IMO.

    -----

I have some extra questions.... hehe..

    1. When you press an icon to launch an app, sometimes, there is a delay of up to 2-3 seconds of "nothingness" and my friends all press the icon like 2-3 times thinking that they didn't press it properly or that it's not responding. (e.g. Mail app) This nothingness delay makes the N9 look and feel VERY slow. Is anything been done about this? iPhone and Android launch a splash screen or something within a few millisecond of pressing an icon. Then it starts loading the app. Can N9 be made to do this also? Little things like this makes people think N9 is slow and unresponsive.

    2. Can the security lock screen be changed so you don't have to press the OK button after pressing your number sequence? Have you tried using a Windows Phone 7 phone? If so, you will find that N9 is much worse than it. When I press 1,2,3,4,5 in sequence really fast, N9 struggles to keep up. Then I have to press OK button also.

But on WP7 phones, you just press 12345 and voila, it unlocks. No need to press OK. Also, it just feels soooooo much faster and responsive compared to the N9. N9 just feels laggy even when pressing the numbers.....

    3. Are you planning for any minor updates in-between PR1.1 and PR1.2? What I really want is lots of small updates instead of one huge update once a year type of thing. (or alpha, beta versions for those who are willing to risk it) I would rather 1.1, 1.1.5, 1.2, 1.2.5, 1.3 at least. I'm sure others would like this also. =)

    Anyways, thanks for answering!!

    ReplyDelete
  163. I also noticed something strange. The weather on top of the first screen, right of the date, is never (or just in a few cases) activated! why? it should be as soon i m with an internet connection no?

    ReplyDelete
  164. About answering calls; yes its a real hassle to have multiple steps for these. Thats why its so weird to me that you dont allow different actions depending on swipe direction as Ive mentioned earlier (up to answer, left to unlock, right to reply with text, down to reject).

But I assume developers are adamant about it being a multistep process to handle incoming calls :( .

Question though: My twitter client just stopped updating to feeds for some reason. So I removed my twitter account and created it again, and now it works. Also, Accuweather on Feedscreen stops refreshing some times and I have to enter the app itself in order for it to work again.

Also; OS-wide copy/paste has been rumored to come in PR 1.1. Is this true or is it not implemented until 1.2?

Last one, I promise: Textentry fields in the browser, like the one Im writing in right now. No copy/paste, no magnifying glass, not scrollable, and screen doesnt focus on your text as you write, so most of the time you write blindly.

    When will that be fixed?

Again thank you so much for answering these questions, it feels great to communicate about these things and feeling heard.

How is folder support implemeted? I thought of making 4 constantly displayed icons on the bottom, each meaning a folder, click one - icons on the top are changed, click another - you're in the another folder. Yeah it would be 4 folders only, but UI would not be heavily changed at all.

I'll try to get some display expert comment to it."

    @konttori

There's also a color banding issue described in that thread that aegisdesign linked to.
    It looks quite washed out....
We found it's set to 16bit, when set to 24bit it improves in some areas (UI/apps).

    - imap sync but if i erase an email or read it, it will not appear as deleted or as already read on my computer!

    - on "my moves" app, once a move is assigned to a gesture how can i choose to assign it again to no gesture?

  169. I forgot one important point. I thought this mobile has the best network reception, but i noticed on the n9 of my girlfriend and on mine that very often the connection is not good. It happened a lot of times that people are trying to call us and they are redirected to the combox instead of make the phone ring! Those problems happened even when the phone seem to have quiet a good reception and we are not moving it!

So, my girlfriend sadly said to me that her iphone had better reception.
It is normal ? The 1.1 will solve this kind of problems? Thanks a lot

  173. Hi Konttori, I have 2 questions.

    1) If Alien Dalvik or OpenMobile wants to work with Nokia to build Android emulation at the firmware level for N9 will Nokia agree?

2)Why not hold a worldwide app coding competition to boost the number of useful apps for N9?

Thanks for your time. And thanks for PR_1.1.

  174. Congratulations on rolling out PR 1.1. Im tempted to ask if you have any idea when Ill be getting my update, but gods know youll probably have enough of that, and either way it wont affect when I get it :) .

Just thought Id congratulate you on the rollout and the completion of the first FW launch for this insanely sweet device.

  175. I would like to set some not default ringtones to contacts.

If I set a custom ringtone as main ringtone, it works properly.
If I set a default ringtone to a contact (change main ringtone only in one contact), it works properly,

but when I set a custom ringtone to a contact, the phone rejected the calls from that contact after one ring.
I tried to copy the custom ringtone to /home/user/.ring-tones folder and the song appear on the ringtone list next to the defaults, but the result is the same.

    Any suggestions

  176. Hi
I need voice dialing, when i drive my car.
It would be nice to have quick BT on/off lock screen button, like music player ones.
Video calls would be nice, so i can chat with my wife, when she is away on business trip.
If you are saying, that voice dialing and video calls never come, then i have to sell my phone. i paid 670€ for the device and i' m disappointed.

  177. Hi,
I am wonderig. When some of my friends post a Youtube link on their Facebook wall- is it possible to open it automaticly with Youtube app on my N9 since lack of flash (the same as on my iPad)?

  178. Glad to hear that contact icons for direct dialling are coming in a next update.
Coming from Android and Symbian, one thing I suppose I'd miss in the N9 is direct access to frequently-used settings, such as for switching on-off specific radios, enabling/disabling data traffic, automatic screen rotation, airplane mode, etc. This I can accomplish on Android and Symbian with toggle widgets on the home screens.

I know the N9 slide-down status bar incorporates some of these switches, as I've seen on screenshots. I'd like to know if the user can choose which switches to include there.

As an alternative, are system settings accessible via the Qt API? If so, I suppose that somebody could write a control panel application in which the users could create a custom panel containing toggles for their most-frequently used settings. One could then launch the application and keep it active in the background. A setting could then be changed with three to four actions: swipe to the task view (one or two swipes), click on the control panel application to bring it into foreground, toggle your preferred switch. That's still a bit more than the Android way, that requires as few as two actions: click on home button, click on the toggle widget if it's on the main home screen (may require one or more swipes to get to a lateral home screen if the toggle widget is not on the main screen).

  179. Hi, I just updated to pr1.1, and now my camera is not working any more. I have already seen quite some comments in other blogs from users with the same problem. Is there any work around for that issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated... .

  182. I find that Event homescreen could be made into a much powerful tool than now. Essentially the current design only act as a bridge to social network apps, feed, email, sms and all notification relevant apps. While this design is not too bad. What I hope the Event homescreen to become is to be a place where I can put immediate actions into.

For example a twitter post appears on my Event homesreen, by clicking it, it brings me to the relevant app and post itself but I believe it's more intuitive if it allows me to quickily reply, retweet, dm or open the link it shows on Web, all done without lauching the app.

Much more can be said about FB status as well, which it should allow me to comment immediately, like or open the link presented without lauching the app at all.

Of course more complex features such as viewing the person profile or to befriend/follow or viewing the picture should be done in the app itself.

Same goes with Feed items, I really don't see the point of clicking the update only to find myself thrown into Feed app and then lauching to Web which is silly.

  183. Hi,

for all that had problems with their update to pr1.1 (camera not working any more and other issues), the problem is discussed in detail here:

    http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=79802

The solution that worked for me was the following:

    - enable DEV mode
    - open Terminal
    - enter "devel-su -"
    - enter password: "rootme"
    - now this should appear:

"BusyBox v1.19.0.git (MeeGo 3:1.19-8+0m6) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

    mesg: Operation not permitted
    RM696-34-1_PR_001:~#"

    - now enter: "reboot -u"

This solved the problem for me. I DID NOT have to flash my device. @Konttori: Any comment from your side on the update problems?

  184. I found a bug in PR 1.1 with the VKB:

the shiftkey no longer works with hold/release.

You cant hold shift down, press a symbol, and release shift and be back at the QWERTY. It ALWAYS sticks now.

Where can I report this bug?

  185. Hi Konttori, I installed PR1.1 in my N9. Great job! Thanks!
However we need some improvements in sync with MfE, mails are ok, but calendar entries and tasks is not ok. I have duplicated task and to-do entries.
    Keep on the good work!

  186. There might be a bug in the standby screen handling:

It seems to me that you toggle the display brightness when going to standby, so that the display is dimmer when showing the clock. So far so good. But when the phone is already in power saving mode, and then goes into lock/standby mode, the display brightness intensifies instead of becoming dimmer.

  187. Hello Konttori,

Just a quick question, does the N9 supports screen orientation locking? If no, is there any plan to implement it?
Also, I was also a bit curious about how customisable in term of app replacement the N9 was. For example can a third party app replace one of the homescreen or even the lockscreen?

Anyway, keep up the great work!

  188. Hi Konttori,

brilliant blog! I've been playing around with an N9, and will soon own one, but I do have a question about the keyboard. I think the Swype integration is fantastic, but I'm not a great fan of Swype... Is it possible to get auto-correct to be even more predefined? I'm a fan of the aggressive auto-correct, but it's... a little too aggressive. When I type a word that the phone thinks is something else, there is no way for me to stop it auto-correcting! Also, if it does auto-correct, I'd like to go back and fix it, but then it'll correct it again... And so we go round and round until I give up :D Also, since I mostly type in English, it would be helpful to have some predefined corrections, so for example: "i" always would correct to "I", "cant" to "can't", etc. This just saves me having to put the apostrophes in there myself.

Any idea if this would be included in any future SW updates?

  191. Okay one suggestion, I think everyone would like:

Nokia Bubbles on the N9 lockscreen, only except dragging to a central point to unlock to the app, you drag the bubble off the edges.

It makes more sense for the slide-oriented UI that meego harmattan uses, and is far more functional and visually appealing than the current bar-form for notifications, which are deceptive in that it appears like you must slide horizontally, but in actuality you CAN slide in an arc from the notification and off the edge to unlock.

    Thoughts?

  192. Hello Konttori, the N9 is fab. Don't start putting widgets and other silly things all over it. People here don't always know what's best! The three screen system works well, although i think it should only have two screens. I don't use the events one much, seems a waste. Anyway, what i want to know is will the camera get better? My N82 camera is fab and i feel as if the N9 comes up short, especially in lower light settings. I know the N82 has xenon but the camera module is over four years old. Is there much upside left for camera improvement?

  197. Hello, mr. Konttori, and thanks for answering these questions in your blog. All you maemo/meego developers seem to be much more community oriented, thats really great!

And now my small observation after installing the pr1.1 upgrade; in the email client which in itself is really great, there's one really big annoyance; when reading an html email that you need to scroll horizontally, it's next to impossible to do that without the client thinking that you want to swipe to the next/previous email. Not sure if this was introduced in 1.1, just didn't notice it before.

Within the Phone Call App there is this white context menu icon on the right of the red button. I think it is not positioned correctly. It should be moved up by 3 pixels.

  200. Konttori, This blog and N9 are just great, thanks.

The pr1.1. camera update did magic to photo quality :).

Couple of things I would like to see in N9.
    1. It would be very useful to have multiple icon selection when arranging icons in application view. This would make sorting so much faster and easier and take away the pain from sorting. Also icon auto arrange by name, type etc. would be great. Planned in future updates?

    2. The inability to connect to corporate Wifi networks using WPA EAP, PEAP, MSCHAPv2 is a major pain and does not work at all currently. Any advices how to get authentication to work. N9 tries to authenticate, but drops connection likely due to certificate issues. In N8 disabling EAP-SIM and EAP-LEAP helped until the recent security update in the network, and now even choosing/importing right certificate does not help. Is is possible to change change EAP-SIM and EAP-LEAP settings in N9? Anyway, the less technical fix for this in future releases would be important as this seems to be a common issue and prevents use of N9 and other Nokia phones in many corporations, universities etc.

    ikt
