UKMP 1.0 out

UKMP is a music player for the Nokia internet tablets 770 and N800. It focuses on ease of use of graphic way of accessing your music.

It comes out on two skins: light and dark. This is mainly in the interest on supporting theming in the future versions and currently just to work better in sunlight. The dark skin is a bit too dark to really work when you are on the move, so the light skin is better for those situations.

Here is a screenshot of the dark skin:

It took much longer than I anticipated to get the ukmp out. This has mainly been because of problems playing mp3s that have cover data in their id3 tags.

New in this release is the support for all mp3s, a bit modified layout and support for seeking forward and backward in the song.

You can download ukmp from here:
https://garage.maemo.org/frs/?group_id=234&release_id=658

It needs python, so if you don't have it, you can install it from here:
Python installation

If you have never heard of the payer, have a look at this video I conjured for your pleasure: Link to demo video

  1. The Python install link seems not to function. Is there another place to download the app? Thanks

  3. That nice :) I like the user interface.

Does it (or will it ever) play OGG files? All my music is stored as OGG Vorbis and currently I have to transcode files to play them on my N800.

  4. In the future, it should support ogg as well. Just not yet.

I must be the only one, but this app displays ALL of my covers incorrectly.

How does this app get it's cover information? The covers it shows I have never seen before...

  6. I have been improving the cover loading procedure for the next release. Currently it uses yahoo, but the next version will use msn.

Also, OGG support has been added to the next release as well. It can't read the id tags from ogg yet, so it uses the path instead. Future versions will have ogg support as well.

Try using the awesome amazon.com API. That's what I used for a web based app that did something similar, and had very good results.

Why not have it load from the ID3 tag's cover art?

  8. I have a few reasons for choosing the yahoo / msn / google route.

    1. Most mp3s don't have cover art in id3. Thus this cannot at least be the only solution.

    2. Amazon contains almost only English music (ok, I give you French and German), thus it cannot be the only source.

1.1 version will have much better album cover support. I hope it will be able to find you covers as well.

  9. Hi :-) great job . . .

I've just one question : could we explore our network music library by folder ? or just by tag . . . I'd really rather the first one . . .

  11. Please try the latest version. At the time of writing it is version 1.3.

    http://konttoristhoughts.blogspot.com/2007/06/ukmp-13.html

If that version isn't working, please let me know.

The problem might be related to a known bug, which will be fixed in the next version. Please contact me by email if 1.3 won't fix the problem for you.

You can find the error by opening xterm and writing Mediacenter and pressing enter.

  14. Hi cr@zy:

Well, video support is on its way. Have you updated to the latest
version already? It's 1.3 If I have the time, I'll release 1.4 today.

I recommend quiver for images. I think it's the best one out there at
    the moment.

I would use similar interface for other apps as well if I had the time.

QUOTE: Just put a cover.jpg a folder containing mp3 files.

Since the sentence is clearly mistyped I do not know what it means. Does one need to put a file named cover.jpg within the album folder and the program will use it? If not please correct me.

Also, it has never asked me to correct the album covers or clean them up. How does one do it after the fact?

I love this program and find Canola less useful.

  16. First of all, update always to the latest version, 1.3 supports 'custom covers'.

To update a cover, just delete the old cached file from MMC/covers directory. If you want to replace any of those, easiest way is to just well... replace the file in the covers directory.

Another method is to put a cover.jpg file in the directory of the mp3 files that you want to use that cover image. And to be sure all files get updated covers, just delete the covers folder from your mmc.

  17. Normally UKMP will retrieve the covers automatically from the internet.
